Dell Driving Transition to Energy-Efficient LED Displays
- Announces 12-Month, 100 Percent Mercury-Free Target for New Laptops
- Multi-Year Energy Savings Estimated at $20 million
Effective Dec. 15, 2008, two-thirds of Dell Latitude E-Family laptops will be shipped with mercury-free LED back lighting as a standard feature. This includes the Latitude E4200, E4300, E6400, E6400 ATG and E6500. Also shipping with LED back lighting as a standard display will be the Dell Precision™ M2400 and M4400 mobile workstations.
In addition to being mercury-free and highly recyclable, LED displays deliver significant energy savings compared to cold cathode fluorescent lamp (CCFL) technology. For example, Dell’s 15-inch LED displays consume an average of 43 percent less power at maximum brightness, resulting in extraordinary cost and carbon savings. The company estimates customer savings of approximately $20 million and 220 million kilowatt-hours in 2010 and 2011 combined, the equivalent of annual CO2 emissions resulting from energy use of more than 10,000 homes.
Dell also estimates that at least 80 percent of its total laptop volume will be delivered with LED as a standard back-lit display by the end of 2009 and 100 percent in 2010. The company’s progress in LED technology is evidenced not only by this long-term commitment but also by development efforts over the past 18 months. Dell expects the development and supply chain enablement efforts to pave the way for others in the industry to follow.
Becoming the ‘Greenest’ Technology Company on the Planet
Dell is fulfilling its commitment to become the ‘greenest’ technology company on the planet. In August, the company announced that it had met its carbon-neutral goal five months ahead of schedule through a combination of operational efficiencies, greater investment in green power and responsible offsets to cover remaining impacts.
In June, Dell achieved an energy efficiency milestone by becoming the first company to introduce an “80 PLUS Gold-certified” power supply for servers, exceeding 2009 targets outlined by the Climate Savers Computing Initiative.
Dell also introduced its first “hybrid” PC that is about 80 percent smaller than a standard Dell desktop and consumes up to 70 percent less energy.
Based on worldwide unit sales beginning in 2005 with power-management features enabled, Dell estimates that OptiPlex desktop systems alone have helped customers save more than $2.8 billion and avoid approximately 27 million tons of CO2.
Dell/EIU Survey Finds Technology Boosts Business Performance In Emerging Countries But Barriers Remain
- Cost of IT, Skill Shortages and Poor Infrastructure Are Primary Barriers to Effective Use of Technology
- Company Creates Dell YouthConnect Initiative Targeting Emerging Countries, Committing 1 Percent of Pre-Tax Profit by 2010
The research’s key findings include:
- Among firms who have been unable to obtain the technology they need, 41 percent of respondents say its high cost has been the primary obstacle;
- 45 percent cite insufficient national and local telecoms and Internet infrastructure as hindrances to better ICT use; and
- 36 percent state that a lack of adequate technology skills among employees prevents the effective use of ICT.
Mr. Dell said another essential part of the technology solution is helping more people in more places, including emerging countries, acquire skills to make the most of what IT can enable.
“We are committed to doing our part in addressing the skills gap with Dell’s newly formed Dell Youth Connect, donating 1 percent of our pre-tax profits to IT skills training by 2010,” he said. “Digital literacy has become critical for success in today’s Connected Era -- we can’t leave any part of the globe behind.”
The Dell YouthConnect will work with non-profit organizations in communities in emerging countries where Dell has a presence. The initiative will direct philanthropic support to organizations that promote education and incorporate math, science, literacy and/or technology skills development for young people up to age 17.
Key Country Observations in the Research
“National variations that emerge in the survey suggest that Brazilian, Indian and Mexican managers provide a particularly positive assessment of the impact of ICT in their businesses and -- in the case of Indian executives -- their future ability to access key resources such as skilled staff,” says Carla Rapoport, managing editor, Technology, with the EIU.
Among other observations from Ms. Rapoport and the EIU research team are:
- Despite universal concern about skills shortages, 65 percent of emerging country managers expect to be able to hire the people they need with the right technology skills. The most optimistic response came from India, the least optimistic from South Africa.
- Four out of 10 people (39 percent) surveyed believe that, to supplement local recruitment of ICT staff, they’ll also hire people from abroad. Countries where most executives don’t share that belief include Russia, Brazil and India.
- While 89 percent of those surveyed believe that ICT has boosted their organisations’ performance, the figure rises to 93 percent in Mexico and 95 percent in India.
- More than six out of 10 people say they have put ICT to greatest use in improving operating efficiency. This rises to 88 percent in Qatar and 74 percent in Mexico, but drops to 25 percent in Kuwait.
- The question, “Are individuals in my country entrepreneurial in using IT?” received an average 61 percent “yes” responses. That figure climbs to 74 percent in India and Qatar but drops to 40 percent in South Africa.
Dell Expands Global Philanthropic Efforts
- Launches Dell YouthConnect Initiative focused on education and digital inclusion
- Increases giving focus on the world’s “emerging countries”
- Sets goal of being a “one-percent company” by 2010
Mr. Dell spoke at a conference in London today on the IT development of emerging countries, where technology adoption is skyrocketing. For example, the Asia-Pacific region (excluding Japan) along with other emerging areas such as Latin America, Eastern Europe, Africa and the Middle East will account for about 59 percent of global PC volume by 2012, up from 48 percent in 2007, according to IDC.
One-Percent Company
Dell plans to increase overall corporate giving to a level of one percent of company pre-tax profits by the beginning of the company’s fiscal year 2011, which begins in February 2010.
The company’s planned efforts will include Dell corporate cash and in-kind giving and employee directed giving. As the company ramps giving to meet its new targets, new corporate giving will be focused on emerging countries around the world.
“Corporate giving, when conceived and structured like Dell’s global YouthConnect initiative, creates a win-win scenario for business and the public,” said Charles Moore, executive director of the Committee Encouraging Corporate Philanthropy. “Dell’s increased giving and focus on a social area they are well equipped to address, education and digital inclusion, will have a meaningful and positive impact, particularly in emerging countries.”
Dell will maintain a commitment to company and employee support of non-profit organizations in Dell communities around the globe in addition to these new efforts.
YouthConnect Global Initiative
The way people connect and communicate is changing and Dell recognizes that education and access to technology resources are critical to success in the new Connected Era. Dell YouthConnect will direct corporate giving to organizations in emerging countries that promote education, and incorporate math, science, literacy and/or technology skills development for youth aged up to 17.
Dell will direct increased giving in the company’s current fiscal year to India. Today the company issued a request for proposals to non-profit and non-governmental organizations in Indian cities where Dell has a presence. Eligible organizations may apply for one-year grants of up to $500,000 USD per project, with a vision to longer term funding after tracking performance metrics during the pilot period. Dell plans to expand giving in other emerging countries in coming years.

Dell Sees Further Softening in Global Information Technology Demand
When Dell announced Q2 financial results on Aug. 28, 2008, it reported continued conservatism in IT spending in the U.S., which had extended into Western Europe and several countries in Asia. The company is seeing further softening in global end-user demand in the current quarter.
Dell will continue to execute against its five growth priorities of global consumer, small and medium business, enterprise, notebooks and emerging countries. The company expects to incur costs as it realigns its business to improve competitiveness, reduce headcount and invest in infrastructure and acquisitions, but is committed to working aggressively on cost initiatives that will benefit its P&L over time with improved growth, profitability and cash flow. The company grew unit shipments faster than the industry in the first half of calendar 2008 and expects to grow faster than the industry for the full year.
Dell executives will address investors at the Bank of America 38th Annual Conference in San Francisco today. In addition, the company will report third quarter fiscal year 2009 results Nov. 20, 2008, after the close of market.
Dell Premiers First Industry-Approved Burn-To-DVD Downloads
- Qflix Recording Technology from Sonic Gives New Life to Digital Downloading
- Featuring New Hit and Catalog Releases via CinemaNow
- Qflix Certified Media Plays on Standard DVD Players
The Qflix drive bundle is available in the U.S. today as an option on most Inspiron, Studio and XPS laptops for $120, as well as through Dell’s Entertainment, Software and Accessories online store, and will be available soon as option on select consumer desktops. The bundle includes an external Qflix-enabled drive, which also supports standard DVD read/write functions, two recordable Qflix DVD discs, Roxio Venue and CinemaNow software and a USB cable.
“We look forward to bringing this innovative digital download technology to our customers,” said Michelle Pearcy, director, Dell’s global software marketing. “People are accessing and managing more and more digital content with their PCs, but often they are limited by where and when they can view their content. With Qflix, movie fans can now burn their movies and TV shows to DVDs that can be played on most standard DVD player, greatly enhancing the flexibility of their digital downloads.”
“The burnable-in-the-home DVD is well-timed given the growing interest from both consumers and studios in digital distribution,” said Tom Adams, president, Adams Media Research. “Two of the key things holding consumers back in their willingness to purchase movies electronically are worries about long-term ownership and portability of the downloaded file. Providing the security of a DVD back-up and the assurance that the file will play on the majority of standard DVD players--set-top, desk-top or portable -- is a key step forward.”
“The Qflix Platform is bringing the $35 billion DVD sell-through market into the age of electronic distribution,” said Mark Ely, executive vice president of Strategy, Sonic Solutions. “We’re extremely pleased to be working with Dell, Hollywood, and the media and drive suppliers to usher in the age of DVD-on-Demand.”

Microsoft’s server virtualization rapid deployment program has enabled Dell to establish field experience implementing highly available solutions with Hyper-V and SCVMM, serving hundreds of thousands of users.
Integration for Simplified Data Protection, Backup and Recovery
Protecting and managing data in virtualized environments can present significant challenges. Dell, along with its partners, has integrated advanced storage technologies to help customers simplify these processes. The new Auto-Snapshot Manager/VMware Edition for EqualLogic storage arrays delivers automated, integrated and scalable protection of VMware Infrastructure 3 environments. Its direct integration with VMware Virtual Center and use of VMware File System’s folder structure helps simplify data protection issues especially as virtualized environments scale. The company expects to have ASM/VE available by the end of the month as a free download for customers with valid support contracts.
The Citrix XenServer Direct Storage Adapter enables out-of-the-box integration with EqualLogic storage arrays. The integration of EqualLogic’s advanced storage capabilities into XenCenter makes it easier for IT managers to create snapshots, clones and single client images by directly controlling their storage array through the XenServer management interface. Citrix XenServer Dell Express and Citrix XenServer Dell Enterprise Editions are factory-integrated via embedded USB key or hard drive ready and also feature enhanced support for blades, Microsoft Windows Server 2008 and Microsoft Vista, making it even easier for customers to begin implementing their virtualization strategies. Dell also announced an OEM solution with Vizioncore, Inc. to deliver premier offerings including vRanger Pro for backup and recovery of virtualized environments, vCharter for virtualization monitoring, and vReplicator to support high availability and disaster recovery.
New iSCSI SAN Triples EqualLogic Scalability, Supports Consolidated Virtual Environments
Dell is expanding its EqualLogic product line with a new, highly-scalable array – the PS5500E. The new storage array packs 24 or 48 terabytes (TB) of enterprise-class in 4U of rack space – more than doubling the density and tripling the capacity of previous EqualLogic models. The PS5500E extends the family’s scalability to 576 TB, enhancing the EqualLogic line’s position as the premiere virtualized SAN for virtual server environments, and delivering better opportunities for consolidation, tiered storage and disaster recovery sites. The PS5500E is available worldwide, starting at $78,000 USD.
New Virtualization Services to Ease Planning and Deployment
Dell today announced new services designed to simplify the design, deployment, security and management of virtualized environments including:
- Infrastructure Consulting Services for Microsoft Hyper-V deployments – A comprehensive assessment, design and implementation service to accelerate deployment of Microsoft virtualization technologies. The WS2008 Hyper-V Technology Introduction is available starting at $15,700 USD.
- Site Recovery Manager (SRM) for VMware environments – Automates VMware disaster recovery with implementation, on-site installation and configuration of Site Recovery Manager. Dell consultants assist with preparation of a disaster recovery plan and configuration of SRM to execute the plan in the event of an outage.

Dell Triples EqualLogic Storage Scalability, Enhances Data Protection for Virtual Infrastructures
- Expands EqualLogic Line With a Larger Virtualized Array for Tiered Storage Applications
- Introduces VMware Integration for Snapshots Across Entire EqualLogic Series
- Delivers Additional Availability, Protection and Virtualization Features
The PS5500E builds upon Dell’s EqualLogic family with 24 or 48 terabytes (TB) of raw capacity in a 4U array – more than doubling the density and tripling the capacity of its predecessor model, the PS5000E, with equivalent hard disk drives. With the PS5500E, an EqualLogic SAN can scale up to 576 TB under a single management interface. This new array can be combined in the same SAN group with the existing EqualLogic systems. It provides an ideal solution for consolidating common tiered business data and applications such as file services, moderate I/O email, databases and virtual server environments. It can also be deployed for capacity-intensive near-line storage tiers and for disaster recovery sites.
Hosting company Sequestered Solutions Alaska recently launched Data Center Vault, an online client backup application for commercial and federal organizations, on an EqualLogic SAN. The company plans to expand the SAN with the new PS5500E, which it has tested thoroughly with its Microsoft SQL Server-based Data Center Vault application.
“By housing up to 48 TB of raw capacity in a single 4U space, the PS5500E leaves us lots of rack space to support other clients and other revenue-generating services,” said Lara Baker, chief technology officer at Sequestered. “Provisioning new storage is simple with EqualLogic -- just a few clicks – allowing us to be more responsive to our clients. Also, other storage vendors sell similar features piecemeal. By working with Dell, we can eliminate those hidden costs and get everything we need up front.”
Dell is also simplifying and enhancing data protection for virtual infrastructures with a new feature included on all EqualLogic SANs: Auto-Snapshot Manager/VMware Edition (ASM/VE). The unique ASM/VE software integrates EqualLogic snapshots directly with VMware Infrastructure 3 (VI3) environments to provide fast online backups and quick restores of VMware virtual machines and VMFS file systems. The company expects to have ASM/VE available by the end of the month as a free download for customers with valid support contracts.
ASM/VE provides an easy-to-use graphical interface that coordinates the creation, recovery and scheduling of EqualLogic snapshots with VirtualCenter and VMware’s native snapshot technology. This offloads snapshot processing from the ESX Server and enhances protection, storage utilization, and performance of VMware-based virtual infrastructures. The resulting hypervisor-aware snapshot (Smart Copy) can be easily and rapidly recovered.
“A data-protection plan is only as good as your ability to restore,” said Cody Page, IT director of Peterson Sullivan, a Seattle-based CPA firm. “With EqualLogic’s Auto-Snapshot Manager/VMware Edition, I can automate the virtual machine backup process and recover a lot faster with a simple, integrated feature. I was up and running in about an hour with this tool. The whole restoration process was extremely easy.”
EqualLogic Product Line Enhancements
In addition to ASM/VE, Dell also announced several new features to products across the EqualLogic lineup.
* 50 percent more capacity in the Dell EqualLogic PS5000XV, the highest performance iSCSI SAN from Dell, with 450GB 15,000 rpm Serial Attached SCSI disk drives. Expected availability for these drives is October 2008.
* Support for RAID 6 to provide an additional fault-tolerant RAID configuration choice to customers. Expected availability for this feature is January 2009 on all new EqualLogic arrays. It will be available at the same time for adoption by existing customers with active EqualLogic array support or warranty agreements.

Share Gains in All Product Categories and Regions Fuel Dell Revenue Increase in Second Quarter
“We are positioning Dell to win in a new era of global IT spending,” said Michael Dell, chairman and CEO. “We have our most competitive product portfolio ever – whether for digital nomads or hyper-scaled data centers. Our growth at a multiple of the industry across all major product categories for the second consecutive quarter affirms we are on track with our five key business priorities – notebooks, consumer, enterprise, SMB and emerging countries.”
Operating income was $819 million, or 5 percent of revenue. Gross margins in the quarter were adversely affected by actions to drive growth in strategic areas like Global Consumer and EMEA, as well as an increase in deferred revenue from the sale of successful service offerings in EMEA, which will be recognized in subsequent periods.
Dell’s productivity improvements gained momentum in the quarter with operating expenses at 12.2 percent of revenue, a decrease of 1.6 percentage points and the lowest level for Dell in six quarters. Dell’s tax rate in the quarter was 26.4 percent.
In the quarter, the company absorbed $27 million of expense for the amortization of purchased intangibles and $25 million in business realignment costs. Each expense was worth about $0.01 in earnings per share. The company remains committed to achieving annualized cost reductions of at least $3 billion by the end of fiscal year 2011.
“We are making progress in improving productivity and reducing costs,” said Brian Gladden, Dell CFO. “Strategic actions to accelerate growth in certain areas of our business affected gross margins this quarter and there will be some non-linearity in the improvements in our operating income margins as we rebalance our portfolio, make cost improvements and drive growth.”
Dell ended the quarter with $9.5 billion in cash and investments and weighted average shares were 2 billion, a 12 percent reduction. The company spent $1.4 billion to repurchase 60 million shares of stock.
Continued actions have reduced headcount by more than 8,500 in the past year, excluding increases from acquisitions. In the third quarter, the company will attain the goal of 8,900 it set for reductions a little more than a year ago. On an ongoing basis, Dell will invest in strategic growth areas, while focusing on scaling costs and improving productivity.
Company Outlook
Dell intends to continue executing against its five growth priorities and actions to improve competitiveness, with the goal of optimizing growth, earnings and cash flow. Dell will continue to incur costs as it realigns its business to improve competitiveness, reduce headcount and invest in infrastructure and acquisitions. The company sees continued conservatism in IT spending in the U.S., which has extended into Western Europe and several countries in Asia. Demand also is impacted by currency fluctuations. Dell will continue to benefit from improving performance in areas such as emerging countries, notebooks, and enterprise and services, which collectively are driving a more diversified portfolio of geographies and products. The company continues to work aggressively on cost initiatives that will benefit its P&L over time with improved growth, profitability and cash flow.

Ariana's Weight Loss Story
My name is Ariana Huff. I live in Great River, New York and I wanted to share my weight loss story with you. I'm no medical guru or anything like that. I'm just a girl who figured out a system that works better than all the famous diets you tried (you know, the ones that didn't work?). Hopefully my story inspires you to get the same results as me without killing yourself on a treadmill.
I hope my story can help you not just lose weight, but also stay healthy, and feel better about yourself. In the past, I've really struggled with my weight, and I know the awful feeling of being fat. But less than 15 weeks ago, I developed a system using an acai berry supplement and colon cleanser supplement. Since then my life's completely changed. Recently, I've been the happiest and healthiest I've ever been!

Share Gains in All Product Categories and Regions Fuel Dell Revenue Increase in Second Quarter
- Industry-leading Growth in Enterprise Portfolio and Solutions
- Profitability Impacted By Strategic Investments To Drive Long-Term Growth

- Easy-to-use return for repair process at Dell-certified repair facilities.

Tracking life’s details with Windows Mobile
The impetus for this article was my need to track expenses for tax purposes. As a contractor, I need to track mileage, utilities, and other deductible business expenses so that come tax time I’m prepared (good to dream, eh?). In the past, I’ve used Microsoft Office Excel Mobile to track these things. This year though, I thought I’d try a purpose-built app specifically designed for expense tracking.
As I researched the available options for Windows Mobile, I realized that tracking data goes far beyond mere expenses—by the time I finished my Windows Live Search, I had plans to not only track business expenses but also calories, stock prices, and even my mobile phone!
Tracking business expenses
The organizational power of Windows Mobile smartphones, coupled with their take-anywhere portability, makes them perfectly suited for on-the-fly tracking of expense data. Here, in no particular order, are a few of the available expense-tracking apps:
- BillRate by Iambic. This robust app lets you record expenses, mileage, and time, while on the go. You can also store project information and track revenue. BillRate even integrates with the PC versions of Microsoft Office Excel and Office Outlook Contacts, so you can easily maintain up-to-date data. Iambic offers a free, 30-day trial version.
- CohoExpense by CohoSoft. Designed for the business traveler, this nifty app tracks your expenses and organizes them by trip. You can export your expense data in HTML and CSV formats, and you can e-mail your info directly from your mobile phone.
- TealTracker by TealPoint Software. Track time and expenses using the TealTracker intuitive interface. TealTracker reporting features let you generate charts, graphs, and reports, and export them as text or CSV files. TealPoint offers a free trial.
Tracking personal finances
If you don’t need to track expenses for tax purposes, you can still track your spending habits. By tracking your expenditures, you’ll have a better sense of where your money goes. Once you know how you spend money, it’s much easier to start saving some. A few personal finance applications include:
- Keep Track by Ilium Software. Store your ATM, credit, and debit card transactions using the intuitive interface. You can password-protect your accounts, create one-touch buttons for common expenditures, and then categorize your spending to see where your hard-earned dollars are going. Ilium offers a free trial version.
- PocketKeeper by Mobiward. This personal finance management app focuses on your daily out-of-pocket expenditures. With password protection and a free PC companion program, PocketKeeper sheds light on your spending habits and helps you budget for future savings.
Tracking auto expenses
What with gas prices, maintenance, and insurance, cars can suck up quite a bit of cash. For many of us, at least a portion of these expenses are deductible, come tax time. If you need to track your auto-related expenses, consider one of these apps:
- Car Expense Tracker by exs corporation. This app lets you track mileage, consumables (such as oil or filters), fuel usage, and other useful information. Offering support for both miles/kilometers and gallons/liters, Car Expense Tracker even notifies you when it’s time to change the oil. exs offers a free demo.
- TealAuto by TealPoint Software. Use this mobile app to track mileage and expenses for your vehicle. You can also create a customized log for any number of vehicles. Import and export data to text files, CSV files, and Microsoft Office Word files. You can also make a trip log and set reminders for maintenance. TealPoint offers a trial version.
Tracking health
Everyone wants to live a healthier lifestyle. Windows Mobile can help you make smarter eating choices, hone your exercise routine, and track several vital stats like your blood pressure and glucose levels. The following apps can help bolster your health:
- Glucose Tracker by SoundTells. If you’re diabetic or just interested in monitoring your glucose level, Glucose Tracker can help. Automatically record your glucose level, its relationship to your meal, and the time you ate. You can also view trend data to see how your glucose levels change, helping you and your doctor plan your daily drug dosages. Glucose Tracker is a free download.
- iFitOne by Developer One. One of the latest diet and fitness tracking apps to help you lose weight and maintain a healthy lifestyle, beyond simply tracking your progress, this handy app actually motivates you to greater activity. iFitOne can help you achieve your fitness goals.
- Blood Pressure Tracker by SoundTells. This free utility helps track your blood pressure. Tracking your blood pressure can help you avoid hypertension and its resulting health issues. In addition to its easy-to-use tracking, this app also lets you see trend data for your blood pressure over time. This is an invaluable tool for folks with hypertension.
Tracking stocks
There was a time not terribly long ago when I followed the market very closely, checking prices several times a day. Lately, with the decline of the markets, I’m much less likely to check stock prices—it’s just too depressing. Still, the market will eventually turn back toward profit, and I’ll start checking again. That’s when these stock-tracking apps may come in handy:
- STQ by Magnifoca. Stock and Ticker Quotes (STQ) is a stock-tracking program designed specifically for Windows Mobile devices. See your desired information right on the Home screen. You can specify the intervals for your device to check prices and even create alarms for price changes and price targets. STQ also includes advanced charting and comparison tools.
- XS Portfolio by Xcite Software. A complete stock portfolio tool for your smartphone, XS Portfolio lets you manage multiple accounts. It also offers profit/loss alarms, a full range of charts, and support for numerous stock exchanges around the world.
Tracking the tracking device
The GPS capability of mobile equipment means that the very device used for tracking multitudes of data can itself be tracked. With these apps, you can locate a lost or stolen device, or keep an eye on family and friends. If your child misses their curfew, you can track them down. I imagine it’d take just one unexpected visit by dad to that secret party to remind a teenager to tell his parents where he’s going. With just a bit of setup, you can use these apps to track GPS-enabled Windows Mobile phones:
- Eagle Eye Tracker Mobile by Digital Technology Group, LLC. This app turns a Windows Mobile phone running Windows Mobile 6.1 into a tracking device. You can track up to five devices free. Using satellite images and maps, you can see exactly where a Windows Mobile phone is.
- Smartphone Tracker by Yaniv Nahum MSc. This free app was designed to find missing phones. You simply send a predefined text message to the lost phone, causing it to figure out where it is and relay that info back to you. If you misplace your phone, you can quickly locate it. Smartphone Tracker also works for locating missing family members—as long as they have their phone with them.
