“In today’s economic climate, customers are scrutinizing every investment and storage is no exception,” said Darren Thomas, vice president and general manager, Dell Storage. “Our strategy has been to change the economics of storage by delivering simple, capable and affordable solutions. This approach resonates with customers and partners and their feedback and recognition tells me that we are on the right path.”
Dell Storage Milestones in 2008:
In February Dell began worldwide delivery of next-generation iSCSI storage area network arrays – the Dell EqualLogic PS5000 Series. Dell EqualLogic PS5000 Series storage arrays share a revolutionary architecture to serve as the backbone of virtual datacenters. In addition, Dell launched its Enterprise Architecture certification path for its PartnerDirect solution providers, leveraging EqualLogic's existing partner model.
In August, Dell announced its fourth-generation Dell/EMC CX family of storage systems with multi-protocol flexibility and massive scalability -- doubling the number of drives up to 960 in a single array. The Dell/EMC CX4 family offers four models that form the foundation of an enterprise storage architecture that is easy to deploy, manage and upgrade.
In September, Dell added to its EqualLogic product line a new, highly-scalable array - the PS5500E- and introduced advanced software features, including the EqualLogic Auto-Snapshot Manager/VMware edition to improve data protection for virtual server environments.
Throughout the year, Dell announced a series of new storage services designed to help customers simplify the evaluation, deployment and support of storage environments. In February, the company debuted ProSupport, a modular series of support services that helps customers customize and tailor services to fit their technical expertise. Additionally, Dell’s Storage Simplification Assessments portfolio and new storage management and data protection consulting services leverage tools and technologies to help CIOs and IT managers rapidly analyze and deploy storage environments.
Gartner defines midrange disk array products as external controller-based redundant array of independent disks (RAID) that meet the following criteria:Use a dual-controller or cluster architecture.
- Support Unix, Linux, Windows and NetWare server operating environments
- Offer no mainframe support
- Have an average selling price of more than $24,999
According to Gartner, “Vendors in the Leaders quadrant have the highest scores for their ability to execute and completeness of vision. A midrange disk array storage vendor in the Leaders quadrant has the share, credibility, and marketing and sales capabilities needed to drive the acceptance of new technologies. They demonstrate a clear understanding of customer needs; they are innovators and thought leaders; and, they have well-articulated plans that customers and prospects can use when designing their storage infrastructures and strategies. In addition, they have a presence in the five major geographical regions, consistent financial performance, and broad platform support.”
